Sanitary Valves – Introduction, Types & Uses

Sanitary Valves are used at food and dairy processing industries, agricultural or any other industry that have high sanitary hygiene policy. These industries have zero toleration towards health hazards that can be caused due to human contact with these products or their ingredients. They provide clean processing of the products and help keep them sterile and safe. Crevice free, easy to clean, and polished contact surfaces are some of the common features of Sanitary valves.

Sanitary valves have a vast range of options to choose from. Below are the types of valves available.

  • Globe valve
  • Needle valve
  • Pinch valve
  • Butterfly valve
  • Diaphragm valve
  • Plug valve
  • Knife valve
  • Ball valve

Every type of valve has its own functions and works on different principles which we will tell you about in this article. Some among these have similar functioning or principles they work on. But they are differentiated into two different types because of the work they do and the facilities they provide.

Globe valves and knife valves are also known as gate valves both are linear motion valves. Glove valve, however, has a round shape. The name globe is given to the valve on the basis of its shape. It is used in industries in order to regulate the flow of fluids in throttling as well as on/off modes. Gate/knife valves are divides into parallel and wedge-shaped types. A flat closure element slips into the flow of liquid in order to shut its flow.

A pinch valve as the name suggests can be easily pinched in order to stop or start the flow of fluids. It has a flexible elastomer body. Diaphragm valve has similar functions like a pinch valve. The only difference between the two is diaphragm use the elastomeric diaphragm to stop the flow. Plug valve was used during ancient times for plumbing systems in Rome. They are however widely used in industries to control the flow through on/off and throttling service.

Needle valve has a slender shape like a needle which is tapered towards the end which is used to control the flow. Butterfly valve has a metal disc with pivot axes. This helps to shut off the flow. These valves are easy to open and are used as throttling valves. Ball valves are used to tightly shut the flow of fluids. Due to its high range, they are widely used in industries.
